Artist Spotlight: Rizky Kumaseh
Today I have the pleasure of presenting an interview with @rizkumaseh, an uber-talented illustrator and friend to Esther and I.
Rizkumaseh (Rizky) is a visual artist from Indonesia who likes to draw anime and oni mecha; and is currently building a universe, the Gadomashin.
We met through Twitter; I remember seeing one of Rizkys pieces and was taken aback by the finishing effects, the lighting, the noise, and the glitches. Since then, I have fallen in love with the style and have become a big fan.
We recently dedicated a little time to collaborating; Rizky had an extraordinary task of helping me bring Evil Esther to life. I'll never forget the moment; it was 2 am, I couldn't sleep, and we talked about the collaboration via DM. The next minute, 2 hours passed, and we had a clear vision, visual direction and base shape. This process was so enjoyable we ended up making two pieces, and that's when we decided that Esther has a split, Easy going and Evil Esther.
Anyhow, that's enough about our origin story; let's take some time to get to know Rizky.
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hi, my name is Rizky Kumaseh, or people call me Rizkumaseh; I'm an illustrator from Indonesia; I love to draw anime in mecha style. For me, drawing relieves my stress because drawing must always be fun. Every piece I make features a word in Japanese, which indicates my feeling every time I draw a piece, cause yap, its hard for me to maintain an emotion and mood, even my background studies are bachelor of Psychology.
2. How do you get into your creative zone?
I usually try to search and see the artwork from another artist, make myself feel jealous about their art (but in a positive way), search for references, like a post-apocalyptic movie, cyberpunk or sci-fi game, etc. and yap, sit in my chair and start to do some linework.
3. When in the flow, what does your process look like?
I rarely sketch for every piece; for me, art is for stress relief, and mecha don't have a definite shape, so it makes me draw in lines. However, I work with direct inking, and if in the mood, I can make 2 or 3 artwork for a day.
4. Tell us about your Esther piece?
The Esther I made is inspired by anime, how the main character power up with the big sidekick on the back. I see her as a fantasy character with her own world; many things can be explored in the big Esther universe. As she's cute and epic at the same time.
5. What are you most excited about in web3?
Really excited about how web3 connects people even more than what web2 does. I even feel I have a new family and friends on another side of the world; the intimacy web3 makes is next level, I think, and of course, I am thrilled to see people around the world can see my work can buy my work and give value for my work, it means a lot for me.
6. What's the most significant learning experience you've had in web3?
Seeing other people, people with more of an art background, studies, etc., learning from them, and surprisingly, I always meet humbled experts in this space; beneficial and humble, really healthy ecosystem here.
Thank you so much for collaborating with me, Rizky, and for helping me bring Esther into this anime dream, the dual-sided Easy going vs Evil. I cannot wait to build our relationship in the future and collaborate on more things.
